Firefighting

Firefighting is not only an extremely fun job, but it taught me teamwork, work ethic, and leadership. With such a high stake task ahead at any moment, training for fire fighting requires a significant amount of responsibility for each member of the team. For three years prior to beginning any formal engineering teamwork this is how I grew my leadership and collaborative abilities. Working in a crew of 4-6, we trained to deploy hose lines, secure a water supply, communicate effectively with other crews and perform rescues. I was promoted to a Lieutenant position in 2019 and was in charge of making sure everyone in the crew knew where to go and what to do. This taught me to communicate effectively, assign tasks, and take responsibility for failures in the group. Below are some photos from my time on the volunteer force and career force.

Above is the 2018 Volunteer Student force I initially joined. We ran our own engine company, Engine Three, with pump operators, a deputy chief, captains and lieutenants. We ran calls with the career force on Engine Two and Engine One both around town and on Umass Amherst Campus.

Pictured on the left is a crew working together to pack up a 200ft line that was deployed off the back of the engine during one of our weekly trainings.

When the Covid-19 Pandemic hit in March 2020, five of us were fortunate enough to be promoted to full time, to work with Career firefighters who taught me more about EMS and fire than I ever thought I would know. On the left is a picture of me and my new full time crew after responding mutual aid to Northampton for a structure fire about two minutes after our shift began.
